Colton
The story of a little English Bulldog with Spina Bifida.
Hi, I'm Colton!  Thanks for
stopping by to read my story.
 It's a good one. :o)
I was born with Spina Bifida. My hind legs were paralyzed. A nice lady rescued me
from the breeder and took me home as a little puppy. At  her house I grew and my
best friend was a baby fawn named Bella. We were both allowed to run in and out of
the house to play. I became too much for my first mom, so off to BHBR I went.  I
miss my mom, but I have a great new mom and dad that take really good care of me.
A really nice foster family took me in when BHBR accepted me into their rescue.  I
was taken to Dr. Falcon to see what they could do about the sores on my legs
from dragging myself around.  Thank goodness they could tell that I didn't care if I
had them or not, I just wanted to play and be loved.  Don't worry when you see
my injuries, I have no pain now!!
Okay, these are the problems I had when i came to see Dr. Falcon.  My legs
were frozen in a crossed position so every time i had to potty, all of my skin
would be covered by it.  Plus, in order to get around, I would drag myself and I
had a big hole in my thigh.  Dr. Falcon thought it would be best to remove my
useless back legs and get a wheelchair.
This is me after surgery going for a walk. The Sling was a really good idea. I
could get out and exercise and get some good sniffs in.  I needed that after a
four and half hour surgery.  Yikes, that was a lot of work for Dr. Falcon and
Shelbee!!  I guess I almost didn't make it a few times. I'm really thankful for
them!! I have to admit, I am a little embarrassed about the diaper. :oP
We tried a skateboard in the beginning, but it just wasn't the right fit. It made me
mad after a couple tries.  I wanted to be on the ground in my usual position!!
I'm just hanging out with my foster dad at All Creature Veterinary Clinic while
everyone discusses what is best for me.  I love getting my neck rubbed and
cuddling.  Those humans should try it, they'd have a lot less stress. :o)
Here I am all healed up. It's measuring day for my new wheelchair. Eddie's
Wheels is designing a wheelchair JUST FOR ME!!! I feel pretty special.  It will fit
me perfectly!!  I'll be able to go in the creek on my own and go for walks with
my mom and dad. I can't wait.  BHBR just had their annual fund raiser and
enough money was raised to get my chair and pay for my next surgery!! Oh
Boy, I can't wait!!!     Come back soon, you'll see me in my new chair!!!
Anxiously awaiting the new wheels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

UPDATE: 9/11/11  I'm still waiting for my new wheels. They should be here ANY
DAY NOW!!!  I don't know if I can stand the excitement!  Summer is almost over,
so I'm hoping to get some good swims in before it gets cold.  I wonder if I could
go sledding if I put a ski under each wheel???  Hmmm, there's a lot to think
about once I'm rolling. Maybe even a motor, with a remote control for my dad?
The wheels are turning...................

MY WHEELS ARE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take a look at me with my new wheels!!!!!
Counter
My dad is helping me maneuver the steps.
Look at me, I'm doing it!!!! I'm walking like a dog!!!
I am one handsome dude in my wheels!!! It's a little hard to
get used to, but I'll get the hang of it.  Am I cool or what???
I'm having so much fun with my ball, I forgot about my wheels
for a minute!!
I'm kind of tuckered out from all the excitement, I think
I'll take a nap. ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I wuv my mom soooooo much.  Let's give her a big WOOF
WOOF for taking such good care of me.
My story doesn't end here. I go in for surgery next week. I'm a cryptorchid, so that
means my surgery will be hard on me.  Come back and see me. I'll have more to
tell you!!!

10/23/11 I've had an update to my story...because I don't have any legs, I'm having
a hard time keeping my behind where it belongs in the wheelchair. The humans
are busy building up a cushion under my strap. I haven't had my surgery yet
because I need to be up in the wheelchair.

My mom bought me a drag bag to wear in the house.  I tried to rip it off at first, but
she figured out a way to keep it on me...I overheard them talking about making one
for outdoors too.  Hmmmm wonder how I'll work my way out of that one???
update 10/29/11
To all my human and furry friends, I could use some belly bands and diapers.  As
much as it would embarrass me, I need the cloth diaper covering that has
suspenders or some kind of straps to hold it on. I love to take my clothes off, but
my mom and dad would love for me keep privates covered in the house.  Maybe if
you can sew, you could make me some belly bands.  They look pretty easy, but
my feet don't work very well on a sewing machine. Typing on here with my fat
toes is hard enough.
A little doggie advice to all my human friends: Take a nap, chew a bone, you'll
understand why we dogs are happy all the time.

UPDATE 11/10/11:  Colton's cart is currently at the engineer's department at the college.
They are going to make the necessary cuts on the frame to make it small enough for him.
As soon as it is finished, we're adding some foam cushions to secure his rear-end into the
seat and we should be good to go.  This has been a long process!!

Update 11/13/11:  Colton's cart has been modified so it fits his height.  The problem
we're having now is keeping his rear end stabilized in the seat.  Usually the legs
would go through the holes in the seat to hold him in place.  He only has a strap to
hold him in place.  I have made some cushions out of foam and vinyl to affix to the
sides of the seat, but we think the seat itself is uncomfortable for him.  I'll post
some pictures of him from behind.  If you any ideas, please email
